Review
"Hadjian has no final conclusions for his readers in this book, save for the observation that the survivors – including the frightened young Armenian girl on Mount Maruta – are not alone. I'm not sure what that means. Survival keeps history alive, but I'm not sure it guarantees life in the future." (The Independent, June 2018 2018-07-25)"Hadjian's sympathetic portraits of people who, unlike him, have been compelled to shed their Armenian identity is deeply moving." (The National, May 2018 2018-07-25)

Excellent! A very well written book about an almost forgotten issue. I’m really impressed.
Great work of journalism and research
This book explores what happened to the Armenians that remained in their historical homeland after the Genocide on 1915. It was known that there were many Armenians that forcibly converted to Islam as a way of survival. Mr. Hadjian goes town to town in historical Armenian towns and speaks to the descendants of the converted Armenian survivors. What was surprising that a lot of the decedents of these Islamized Armenians actually knew about their heritage (as something that was in the past and not to dig around) and starting to question it now. This was mostly due to Hrant Dink's vocal presence before his murder and the impact of his murder. Some now openly call themselves Armenian and even learn the language and culture. But most do not want (or dare) to change their religion as their family have been Muslim for over a century. So the one of the questions Mr. Hadjian raises is "can you be Armenian and Muslim at the same time?". This is a fascinating read and the way Mr. Hadjian describes the towns and people are very powerful. I would definitely recommend this book.
With the depth of hands on research and clarity of its revelations combined, the book provides insight on the lives of the two million estimated Armenians living in Turkey today and how they have prevailed since the Genocide, living as Muslims, yet holding on to their heritage...
