Thrawn's comic mini series is essentially an abridged retelling of Timothy Zahn's bestselling novel about the titular Star Wars villain. One of the most beloved figures from the old Star Wars extended universe, most of Thrawn's adventures had been relegated to the "Legends" imprint of stories no longer considered canon. Thankfully, Disney made the decision to rescue the brilliant Chiss military commander from the garbage bin and gave him new life in the modern canon with a role on the Rebels TV show and a series of books from Zahn. This story retells the first of Zahn's new canon stories and effectively acts as an explanation of Thrawn's early life in the Empire. After being discovered on an abandoned world where he'd been exiled, Thrawn quickly gains the Emperor's interest and is fast tracked into the military. Alongside his aide and translator Eli Vanto (a lowly ensign who is unwillingly hitched to Thrawn's career), the Chiss strategist quickly makes a name for himself. While also making an ally of Arihnda Price (a character who later shows up in the Rebels show), Thrawn locks horns with a pirate smuggler and proves that while he has plenty of military genius for the battlefield he is somewhat lacking when it comes to navigating the politics of the Empire. As someone who read Houser's comics first, I will say that anyone unfamiliar with Thrawn should absolutely read Zahn's novel first. The comics are the best hits of the main story and rapidly jump around between periods in Thrawn's life. As a straight forward introduction to the admiral, this isn't the best place to start. That said, the art team of Ross and Renaud do a wonderful job bringing these characters to life and make up for some of the writing's short comings. For fans of the character this is a great read, but for casual readers this book will be lacking. As much as I liked it, it certainly could have been edited better (the single issue that is all about Price felt very off for anyone who doesn't know about her from the Rebels). Still it got me interested enough to read Zahn's actual novel and his follow up sequel Thrawn: Alliances.

This follows along - very well - the "Thrawn" novel. It puts to picture even better than what I had been mentally visualizing. I feel like it's classic Marvel, as I've seen between the "Han Solo at Stars End" comic adaptation. The art is fantastic. I love seeing the faces of Parck and Vanto. The colors are beautiful. Panels are done differently from one page to another, allowing for a more natural flow of dialogue and visuals. The differentiation between verbal, inner, and off-panel dialogues is fantastic. I don't know if I've ever been able to tell such differences in any other comic. In issue 4, the night scenes are amazing. The explosions within them are beautiful.Vanto's Log at the beginning is a GREAT setup.Thrawn's hair at first is jarring.I like seeing Vanto visibly unhappy with his role. I feel bad for him though since Thrawn seems to continuously thwart Vanto's goals.Pryce is drawn VERY well.Thrawn's arrogance comes through strong in the latter half. His being nonhuman becomes more and more evident. The Chimera page is special. I wonder at who the two people are in the hologram in the second-to-last pane. The only thing that bothers me is that there are no page numbers.

The story of how Thrawn initially came to be in the service of the Empire and the first steps on his journey to the exalted rank of Grand Admiral is an enthralling one (near-pun intended). It's wonderfully illustrated and brilliantly colored. The book is full of stories of masterful detective work, insight, layers of betrayal, and intrigue. It's amazing to see how a single person of admittedly brilliant intellect even come to be in the presence of the Emperor himself and negotiate in confidence.

A great read for someone already familiar with the story. I definitely recommend reading the actual novel first, otherwise you probably will be confused at times as a lot of things are reduced to a single full-page illustration or just mentioned in passing as having happened.I think a new reader of the Thrawn story won't get the full depth and emotion the story offers by just reading this trimmed and fast paced comic. For instance, one exciting battle is reduced to a single full page illustration, the other battle (one of hte biggest in the story!), is bypassed entirely and just said it was done. I found that surprising myself, as it was one of the key moments for his character in the book. But the intricate plot is lost in the comic , so if you don't already know the story you'll lose a lot.So definitely a good read, and great illustrations, but i do recommend it only for those that have read the novel first and already know what's going on

Most comic adaptations of movies or novels are lacking either in characterization or flow. This is an example of how to do it right. The scripting is superb, the art is unique and clear, and the coloring is honestly sublime. Well worth your money and time.

To me, Thawn is a very compelling character in the Star Wars universe. He is smart and goes against the grain of conventional wisdom. Usually not wise in the Empire but Thrawn made a very successful career out of it. I enjoyed this graphic novel very much. I did not realize it would follow the Timothy Zahn novel when I ordered it. Once I realized the story was going to be the same, I took time with the illustrations that added to the story line. I did like the novel better but I'm glad that I got this.

A grand introduction to Thrawn. I loved it because I feel like it mixes the best parts of OT and PT. Thrawn is a chess player and the politics and prejudices add so much. I love this guy and glad they brought him into the new canon

if you read the book, you can skip this one. it's the same.
