Rising Above: Inspiring Women in Sports, by Gregory Zuckerman

From School Library Journal

Gr 6–8—The second book in the "Rising Above" series focuses on famous woman athletes who achieved greatness while overcoming personal and professional challenges. Zuckerman, coauthoring with his two sons, writes about 10 U.S. athletes dealing with a variety of challenges, including medical issues, racism, and loss. Each chapter shares the athletes' backgrounds, early experiences, and achievements. The profiles span multiple eras (1960s great Wilma Rudolph, 2016 Olympian Simone Biles) and a variety of sports, from tennis to mixed martial arts. The pieces are substantial and include specific incidents; for example, Serena Williams's Indian Wells tournament experience in 2001, where she was booed by racist spectators. There is also a welcome focus on overcoming body image challenges; while certainly not unique to women, it is not often spotlighted as an obstacle to athletic success. Features on arguably lesser-known athletes, such as WBNA stars Elena Delle Donne and Swin Cash, are a nice change of pace for young readers looking for examples of positive role models. VERDICT A varied and inspiring collection of sports biographies for middle school library collections.—Casey O'Leary, Mooresville Public Library, IN

Great book. While some chapters offer more content than others, every chapter is enjoyable and has a great message. Look forward to reading his first book about men athletes.

Great book for young people

We preordered this book based off the reviews of the authors previous book, intending for my 5th grade daughter who follows several of these athletes and generally enjoys biographies. Unfortunately, we found the writing to be dry and uninspiring. We've purchased many books similar to this on other topics and this one was a bit of a disappointment.

Women in sports!! How far we've come in the last 20 years! I've always enjoyed reading about women in athletics and found The Zuckermans' book to be easy to read, very inspiring, and motivating! I really enjoyed reading about how these ladies, who came from humble beginnings, broke through many challenges and endured hardships that lead to ultimate victory in their lives. I'm passing it on to my 10-year old grand daughter who is also aspiring to greatness, and the lessons learned here is, if the "Rising Above" ladies can work hard to achieve their own personal victories, anyone can!

This book is so inspiring! The variety of stories, lessons, and showing how they rose above their circumstances made this book great. I gave "Rising Above" a 4 out of 5 stars. Even if you're not a kid I recommend this book. It's a pretty quick read with lessons that everyone - child, teen, adult, athlete or not, sport fans or not, female or male - should learn. I love that there's a book about so many women role models. The book was very impacting and written well.

The overall theme of this uplifting and motivating book is about overcoming obstacles to achieve success. The personal stories shared from these amazing athletes, who just happen to be women, inspire by revealing how commitment is a must, circumstances don’t have to be permanent, belief in self is imperative and personal empowerment doesn’t happen overnight. As the Director of Marketing and Sponsorship for one of the largest youth soccer organizations in the United States and lifelong supporter of athletics, I believe readers, regardless of gender or age, will find the lessons here encouraging and beneficial.

Fantastic athlete bios written for the middle grade/young adult reader. Covers issues ranging from body issues to racism and sexism. I love that it not only tells girls you can overcome your struggles but HOW these amazing women did so. Would love to see this book in every library and locker room!

Inspiring, engaging, and uplifting--this is a must-have for all kids!
