This book isn't worth it, at least not for the reasons I use a guide book: to point me in the direction of the most interesting places to visit or eat at (and stay at too, but that's lower priority for me), and maybe to provide some historical or cultural context. The descriptions of cities/history/sights are extremely dull and went in one ear and out the other as a result. The book also offers essentially ZERO opinion on which sights to prioritize visiting and which are less worthwhile. It'll give an objective description of each place, sure, but nothing along the lines of "some say this is a tourist trap," or "hiring a guide here is costly but worth it," or "a lot of people are steered here but this other place is equally good." For example, was it worth it to splurge and pay Rs2400 (~$40) apiece to tour the royal quarters in the Jaipur city palace? I'll never know - the book didn't give an opinion either way, so we hedged our bets and didn't go. The only thing I will say it does decently well is tells you how to get to each site by car, public transport, train etc. But asking your hotel's front desk would also work for that.Finally, the book is lacking in images for my taste - only about a 10 total pages with color pictures, plus maybe a few dozen small black and white pictures scattered throughout the remaining 400 pages of text, which are printed on thin, newspaper-like paper. So if you planned to judge whether to visit a place off an image of it (since the descriptions didn't help you decide), you're out of luck. Long story short, my friend brought a different guide, Fodor's, that we ended up relying on for most of the trip. Buy that one instead.Oh, and not surprising, but since the book was published in 2010 the entry prices are all a bit out of date - they'll be a tad higher everywhere you go except for the Taj (which is already high enough at Rs750).
I found this guide unexciting and difficult to read. I have purchased Lonely Planet guides in the past but only purchased this one because my husband thought it would be better. He also did not find it enjoyable to read. I found the descriptions dull and the information was not organized very well. I have purchased the Lonely Planet guide now and find it to be much better for our purposes. I'd recommend going with Lonely Planet.
The Rough guides are very complete, as well as inexpensive. I use only a small number of sections, including the history of the country, its geography, and, of course, descriptions of the sites I intend to visit, tearing out what I wish to carry and read those sections the night or so before I encounter those subjects. I was quite satisfied with the guide book, so "I love it." (five stars).
We are traveling to India for 40 days and spending 16 of them in Rajasthan, 3 in Delhi, 3 in Agra. The guide is small and easy to read. I was able to book mark out the areas I needed. Its a helpful guide, but I will be checking for updated information on restaurants, etc., closer to our trip.
Overall a decent guide. However, the section on Connaught Place (suburb of New Delhi) needs to be expanded to warn visitors of how inhospitable the area is. The area is saturated with scammers who will not take no for an answer and become borderline aggressive when told no. In the guide Connaught Place is presented as a place where foreigners congregate. While this might be the case foreigners need to be warned that in reality this is a place to avoid at all costs.
This book is a great source of information. It provide good and pratical info.Combine with other guides such the DK, they cover the research for a upcming trip to India.I reccommend it.
The information in this book is very helpful and will most likely help in planning a trip to India. Gives great advise on places to see, eat and stay.
I just got back from a two week trip to Rajasthan that was a blend of DIY and guided tour. We spent time in Udaipur, Pushkar, Jaipur, Bharatpur, and Agra. It was my first trip to India and I needed all the help I could get. Fortunately my Rough Guide served me well. It has detailed information on just about any topic. Historical sites, accommodations, restaurants, and travel tips are covered. An important topic to read are the many scams conducted in India against tourists. Shady rickshaw drivers on commission, snake oil salesmen posing as priests in Pushkar, the book has it covered well. It will not prevent you from encountering the scamsters, but it can arm you with knowledge and confidence to deal accordingly so you can enjoy the considerable beauty of India.The book is broken down by regions of Rajasthan. Within these regions, the Rough Guide highlights accommodations and restaurants it deems as worthwhile. Amongst these it gives a special Rough Guide "Author Pick" to ~10%. On a couple of occasions we stayed/ate at their highlighted establishments. From this we recognized the Rough Guide authors as having discerning taste and we began to trust them implicitly. This was put to the test in Bharatpur. Upon arrival to our guesthouse we found out our room was given away. Great, right? The guesthouse tried to make amends by taking us to a nearby establishment. We toured the room and bathroom and saw it was unclean (even by Indian standards). Tired and frustrated from a day of travel, and without a room to stay in, we turned to our Rough Guide, selected an "Author's Pick" guesthouse. Their suggestion (Birders' Inn, Bharatpur) was everything they said it was: inviting, clean, spacious, and at a reasonable rate (~2000 rupees w/bfast). Given our time of need this alone justified the purchase of the book.Highly recommended.
