Walter J. Boyne is the former Director of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum and the Chairman Emeritus of the National Aeronautic Association. Holley Award from the Air Force Historical Foundation for contributions to the preservation of Air Force history. He is also a member of the French Society de l’Air et de l’Espace.Colonel Boyne is one of the most frequently-televised authorities in highly-rated aerospace programming of the Discovery and History Channels. He continues to be a much sought-after on-air expert for domestic and international television productions. Colonel Boyne wrote a regular column on historic airplanes for the Air Force Association’s Air Force magazine.Philip Handleman is President of Handleman Filmworks, an Emmy-winning independent production company. He is a long-time pilot who currently owns and flies a World War II-vintage Stearman biplane. Authors couldn't have done a better job describing each featured aircraft in 5,000 or so words. Outstanding descriptions contain conditions, technology and evolution of the aircraft itself, the fascinating people involved, overcoming challenges and even failures and where it fits in/contributes to history. Even those deeply familiar with the featured aircraft will find nuggets within the easy to read, highly informative text. Great balance between technology and people. Personal observations of Walter Boyne are especially poignant bringing familiar aircraft such as the B47 to the life they and their aircrews experienced together at the peaks of their flying careers. Today the B47 is but a memory in museums never to flex those beautiful wings again. Only criticism, and this is voiced by two in the introduction, is the omission of the A-12, SR-71. There is never likely to be a ground take off, air breathing aircraft approaching the performance of the SR-71. Had the authors been limited to 25 in the title it should have been 25 plus 1! However, even with this omission (there are many books on the Blackbird or Habu) "The 25 Most Influential Aircraft of All Time" is a must addition to any and all aviation libraries! Don't miss this!

With the title "The 25 Most Influential Aircraft of All Time", and with a former director of the National Air & Space Museum as co-author, I was hoping for some thought-provoking selections and, especially, reasoning. Granted, such an undertaking is always subjective, but this book is more like candy for the enthusiast, a sort of American-oriented "aviation's greatest hits".First, the selections. I don't want to give it away by listing every type chosen, but let's look at the organization of the book:Section 1 - On the Edge: Pioneering Platforms. Five types, all from the US. It does, at least, include perhaps the most unpredictable choice, SpaceShipOne. The first three chapters are your standard American primer: Wrights, Lindbergh, X-1.Section 2 - Airways: Commercial Platforms. Six types, only one foreign (Concorde). The only one that isn't in the predictable procession of airliner development is the Lear Jet- and I do applaud that choice.Section 3 - Sky Warriors: Military Platforms. Well, we do at least get more international, but when you're at war, you've got to have villains, right? Seven of eleven are from WWII- one each from England, Germany (not the Me 109, at least), and Japan. The other four from the Second World War period, and all three from postwar, are again US types.Section 4 - Fun Flying: Trainer/Sport Platforms. Three, all American.As another reviewer has pointed out, the chapters are as much (or more) about the people at the helm as they are about the particular chosen subject aircraft, covering a career rather than focusing tightly on the specific 'influential aircraft'. Perhaps because the selections are generally so famous, I thought that evidence of what makes them uniquely influential was often superficial.Perhaps the book wasn't aimed at airplane nuts, who will already know a lot of this stuff. If you are so afflicted, it'll be some pleasing bedtime snacks, but it isn't dinner.
