My husband recently deployed. Before he left we were trying to figure out how best to prepare our 4 and 2 year olds for Daddy being away for so long. I found this book and bought it a couple months before he left. Honestly, my 2 year old hasn't gotten much out of it, probably because he doesn't really comprehend what is happening. Our 4 year old daughter had a wonderful time working on the activities with my husband. Although, she is a little young for some of the activities, they made the most of it. It helped her to understand where Daddy was going and why. Most importantly it helped to reassure her that he loves her and is not abandoning her. The book is great and would probably be that much better for an older child.

We've only just flipped through a couple pages but it's clearly a very great, creative way for kids to express their feelings and emotions leading up to deployment day and all the way thru to the end. My 6 year old can't wait to start this weekend with her dad she loves coloring and little puzzle games in the book. It's not really age appropriate for my 4 year old however can't do a lot of the puzzles and isn't really interested in coloring. But I did see several of the crafty things, like making a mail box with shoe boxes to put letters in, that will hold his attention and we will all have fun. Overall I really like it, I'm using it as a reference though. I'm going to cut pages from that and put them in a scrap book filled with photos and letters and school drawings. I would recommend this book to children 6 or up. Any younger I would just get on pintrest and find free ideas for crafts that they can do and enjoy.

Got this book for my four year old. We haven't done many of the activities yet but I have flipped through the entire book. It is perfect and will really create lasting memories. This book is for sure for younger children. It reminds me of a coloring and activity book. Most of the activities involve drawing and coloring pictures. But others are recommendations on how to explain things to the child through an activity.

I purchased this book for my 2 and 3 years old boys before their Dad was going to leave on a year long deployment. I found a lot of deployment resources were a little too advanced for their ages but this one fit the bill perfectly. It has a variety of activities, coloring pages, and worksheets to help very young children grasp the concept of deployment and understand what it happening as well as building a sense of pride in their Dad's service. I would recommend getting this a little before the deployment as there are some activities at the beginning for the child to do with the deploying parents as well. Its also great this comes in a "Mom's Deployment" version as well.

My 4 year old son loves this workbook as we are currently going through our third deployment. It has helped tremendously (me and him) with ideas on what to do to talk about it and to express how we're feeling about it.

Age level isn't as described. Otherwise, it's a good book.

I bought this book for my 3.5 year old daughter a week after my husband deployed to Iraq. I wish that I had thought about things before he left as some of the activities in this book deal with before you leave and the day you leave...but it still is very good. I've started recommending it to all my friends who are going through the same thing. My daughter is definitely on the younger side for this book as it has dot to dots, writing sections and other sections that are mildly advanced for her. We still make it work and I'm ver happy that we have purchased this. I actually wish that the Support Services on base would supply these books because I think they would be a great addition to pre-deployment packages for kids!

Best for children 5+. This is a great tool to help kids understand/cope with deployments. I suggest getting it BEFORE a deployment as there are pages the child and the deploying dad can do together. I wish this was publicized through USO or local MWR facilities. I feel that every child should have this activity book, especially since there are such few GOOD resources for military children.
